A fiber collimator is precisely assembled from a fiber pigtail and a focusing lens (such as an aspheric or collimating lens). It can transform the output from a fiber into a near-parallel Gaussian beam or a controlled focused spot at a designated working distance. Conversely, it can also be used to efficiently couple free-space light into a fiber. By selecting the appropriate lens focal length and AR coatings, and matching the mode field diameter or numerical aperture of the fiber (SM/PM/MM), the desired spot size or divergence can be achieved at the target distance, enabling energy concentration and beam shaping.
This optical fiber collimator uses PM1550 Panda fiber with FC/APC connector, packaged in a 1.8 mm OD stainless steel tube (3.2 × 10 mm) with an optical glass lens. It operates from 1260 nm to 1620 nm(O/C/L), providing a 1 mm beam size at 10 mm working distance. Typical insertion loss is 0.20 dB (≤0.30 dB), extinction ratio ≥23 dB, and return loss ≥55 dB. Maximum optical power handling is 500 mW.
